Want to know your level of English? The LingoWise free online English test gives you a clear answer in a few minutes. It is an adaptive test: the questions adjust to your answers, so you don’t waste time on what you already know and you quickly reach your real level, from A1 to C1. At the end you get your result on screen straight away and an email summary with the corrections. No account to create: your name and an email address are enough.
How the test works
The test measures grammar and vocabulary with multiple-choice questions. Because it is adaptive, it stops as soon as it has worked out where you stand: 10-15 questions are usually enough instead of the forty or so in a traditional test. During the test you don’t see “right or wrong”: the full corrections come in the summary email, because going over your own mistakes is the best way to learn.
Why a teacher confirms your level
No software can replace a teacher’s ear. Grammar is only half the picture: speaking is what really defines your level. That is why, after the test, a real teacher writes to you within one working day and, if you like, offers you a short 15-minute call, free, to confirm the result and talk about your goals. It is the part automatic tests don’t have.
English levels: the CEFR scale
| A1 – Beginner | You understand and use simple everyday expressions. |
| A2 – Elementary | You communicate in routine situations and on familiar topics. |
| B1 – Intermediate | You get by when travelling and at work on topics you know. |
| B2 – Upper intermediate | You interact fluently, even on technical topics. |
| C1 – Advanced | You use English flexibly for work and study. |
| C2 – Proficiency | You understand and express yourself almost like a native speaker. |

Frequently asked questions
Is the LingoWise English test free?
Yes, the test is completely free. You see your result on screen and receive an email summary with the corrections, at no cost.
Does the test measure speaking too?
No. It measures grammar and vocabulary in writing: pronunciation, fluency and speaking in a meeting do not fit into a multiple-choice question. Your speaking level is assessed by a teacher in a 15-minute conversation, free.
How long does the test take?
A few minutes. It is an adaptive test: 10-15 questions are usually enough instead of the forty or so in a traditional test, because the questions adjust to your answers.
Is the test in English?
The questions test your English, but the instructions, the result and the summary email are in Italian: LingoWise courses are designed for Italian-speaking professionals.
What is an adaptive test, and why are so few questions enough?
An adaptive test does not ask everyone the same questions: it picks each question based on the answers you have already given. So it does not waste your time with questions that are too easy or too hard for you, and 10-15 questions are enough to estimate your level, instead of the forty or so in a traditional fixed-question test. It is still an estimate of grammar and vocabulary: your level is confirmed by speaking, in 15 minutes with a teacher.
Do I need to sign up or create an account?
No. You do not need an account: your name and an email address are enough to receive the test summary.
How do I find out my level?
At the end of the test you see an estimate on screen and receive the summary by email. A teacher reviews your answers and writes to you within one working day. Your level is confirmed by speaking: 15 minutes with a teacher, free.
Is the test result reliable?
It is a good estimate of grammar and vocabulary, but it is still an estimate: 10-15 written questions cannot measure how you speak in a meeting or an interview. If you take the test again and get a different level, that is normal: it happens mostly when you are close to the border between two levels, and in that case the result shows you a range. To be sure, 15 minutes of speaking with a teacher are enough, free.
Is the speaking call mandatory?
No, it is optional and free. It takes 15 minutes and it is how you confirm your level and work out where to start. If the test estimate is enough for you, you can stop there: no phone calls or WhatsApp messages, unless you choose them in the form. At most you receive the teacher's summary and a reminder by email.
Which levels does the test measure?
The test covers the European CEFR scale, from A1 (beginner) to C1 (advanced), for grammar and vocabulary. It does not measure speaking: a teacher assesses that, and that is where your final level is confirmed.
Is my data safe?
Yes. We use your name and email only to send you the test summary and to get back to you about your English learning. We never share your data with anyone and we do not sign you up to any newsletter.
Need to assess your employees’ English?
This test is designed for one person at a time. If you need to understand the English level of a whole team — to form groups at the same level, plan a corporate English course or decide where to start — we take care of it: we map everyone’s level and give you a clear picture, not just a list of scores.
Here too, the part that matters is done by a person: each person’s speaking is assessed by a teacher, because that is where you see the real level of people who need English at work.
The training needs analysis is free and we get back to you within one working day.
