The phrases that carry you through your first week: saying hello, explaining what you do, and asking for help without feeling small.

Tap the speaker beside any phrase to hear it, then say it out loud. The note in italics tells you when to use it.

👋 Step 1 — Saying hello and introducing yourself
  • Nice to meet you, Mr Bell. I’m Sara.” the safe first phrase — it always works
  • “I’m Luca. I’ve just joined the sales team.” your name and your team in one line
Instead of: “I am new.” ⬆️
  • I work in customer service.” say your area, keep it short
🏢 Step 2 — Talking about your job and company
  • I work for a company that makes office furniture.” describe your company in one natural sentence
Instead of: “My company makes furniture. It is a company.” ⬆️
  • I’m the person who looks after the orders.” explain your role with who
  • It’s a job which changes every day.” add one detail about your work
🕑 Step 3 — Asking about experience
  • Have you ever worked with this program?” ask about experience — no date needed
  • I’ve just started, so everything is new.” just = very recently
  • I’ve already met the team, but I haven’t met the boss yet.” already = done; yet = not done yet
🙋 Step 4 — Asking for help on day one
  • Sorry, where is the meeting room?” starting with sorry sounds polite, not weak
  • Can you show me how to use the printer?” people love to help — let them
Instead of: “How this works?” ⬆️
  • Who should I ask about my badge?” find the right person fast
Listen: the language in action

Ben’s first day at the office. Marta shows him around — using this module’s grammar: the present perfect (I’ve just arrived, have you ever, not yet) and relative clauses (the person who, a job which). The highlighted phrases show them in action.

Show transcript
Marta: Ben! Welcome. I’m Marta, and I’m the person who sits next to you.
Ben: Nice to meet you, Marta. I’ve just arrived, and I’m a little lost, to be honest.
Marta: Everybody is lost on day one. Come, I’ll show you around. That’s the coffee machine, which is the most important thing in this office.
Ben: Good to know! Have you ever worked anywhere else, or always here?
Marta: I worked in a hotel before. Then I found this job, which I really like. What about you? Have you ever worked in an office?
Ben: No, never. This is my first office job. And I’ve already forgotten three names this morning.
Marta: Don’t worry, that’s normal. Here’s a tip: write the names down. And this is Tom, the coworker who knows everything about the computers.
Ben: Hi Tom, nice to meet you! Marta, one question. I haven’t got my badge yet. Who should I ask?
Marta: The front desk. Ask for Rosa. She’s the person who makes the badges. Have you filled in the new starter form yet?
Ben: Yes, I’ve already done that, this morning.
Marta: Perfect. You see? Day one, and you’ve already learned the two most important things here: the coffee machine and Rosa.
Ben: Ha! Thanks, Marta. I feel better already.
