Explanation — Relative clauses (who/which/that)
💼 Why it matters at work
The person who leads our team, the file which I sent — relative clauses (who, which, that) add information about a person or thing in one smooth sentence.
who = people. which = things. that = people or things.
1. who / which
Use who for people and which for things.
→ The man who called … / The report which I sent …
2. that
that can replace who or which in defining clauses.
→ The file that I need / The man that I called
3. Joining two ideas
Relative clauses combine two sentences: The woman works here. She is new. → The woman who works here is new.
⚠️ Watch out
- Don’t repeat the subject: The man who
hecalled. - Use which/that for things, not who.
