Overview & Goals

Module 1 · B1+ Business English

Persuasion & Influence

In this module you will learn to influence people without imposing on them — the art of getting a colleague, a client or a boss to say yes, or at least to genuinely consider your point of view.

At B1 you learned to say what you think in a meeting. At B1+, the goal is different: it’s not enough to be understood — you need to be convincing. That means choosing your words carefully, framing an idea around what matters to the other person, and knowing how to suggest something without sounding pushy.

Think of this module as your persuasion toolkit. You’ll learn how to frame a benefit so it lands, how to soften a strong opinion into a suggestion people actually listen to, and how to build an argument step by step instead of just stating a conclusion.

And while you do this, you’re building more than phrases — you’re building the confidence to speak up when it matters.

🔤 Grammar in this module. One grammar point powers this module: should / could / might. These modal verbs are the engine behind persuasive suggestions in Useful Language — Persuasion & Influence (“You could try…”, “We should consider…”). It has a short explanation and G1–G4 practice.

🎯 By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Suggest an idea in a way that invites agreement instead of resistance
  • Use modal verbs (would, could, might) to soften strong opinions into persuasive suggestions
  • Frame a proposal around the listener’s priorities, not just your own
  • Use the second conditional to present hypothetical benefits (“If we did X, we’d see Y”)
  • Recognise and reuse real persuasion language from a workplace conversation

Let’s get started. 🚀
