Overview & Goals

Difficult Conversations

The conversation you are avoiding is already costing you money. It just does not appear on any invoice.

In this module you will learn to hold the conversations most managers put off: the warning, the bad news, the behaviour that has to change. In English, under pressure, without becoming either aggressive or vague. You will practise with a colleague who does not take it well — because that is the version you need to be ready for.

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • open a difficult conversation without an ambush and without an apology;
  • describe a behaviour factually, separating it from the person;
  • stay calm when the other person becomes defensive or emotional;
  • state consequences clearly, using conditionals;
  • close with something written down that both of you agree on.

Grammar in this module. Conditionals (if this continues, we’ll have to…, if I were in your position…) and question tags — the small endings that check agreement without confrontation (that’s fair, isn’t it?).
