Overview & Goals

MODULE 5 · TALENT TALK — ENGLISH FOR HR

Difficult Conversations

The conversation you are avoiding is already costing you money. It just does not appear on any invoice.

In this module you will learn to hold the conversations most managers put off: the warning, the bad news, the behaviour that has to change. In English, under pressure, without becoming either aggressive or vague. You will practise with a colleague who does not take it well — because that is the version you need to be ready for.

🎯 By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • open a difficult conversation without an ambush and without an apology;
  • describe a behaviour factually, separating it from the person;
  • stay calm when the other person becomes defensive or emotional;
  • state consequences clearly, using conditionals;
  • close with something written down that both of you agree on.

🔤 Grammar in this module. Conditionals (if this continues, we’ll have to…, if I were in your position…) and question tags — the small endings that check agreement without confrontation (that’s fair, isn’t it?). Each has a short explanation and G1–G4 practice.

📦 What’s inside this module

  • Reading — The Conversation You Are Not Having: what the conversation you are avoiding really costs, with key vocabulary.
  • Vocabulary — eight flip-cards with pronunciation.
  • Useful Language — phrases for saying the difficult thing calmly and clearly, with a dialogue to listen to.
  • Writing Practice — The Written Record: a short task with instant feedback from an AI coach.
  • Podcast — a trainer on how to deliver bad news without burying it, with transcript and a short quiz.
  • Roleplay — The Conversation About Lateness, with the AI Tutor, out loud or in writing.
  • Unit Review & Final Quiz — revision notes, then everything from the module (you need 70% to pass).

🤖 Stuck on a phrase? Ask the AI Tutor at any point in this module — a word, a phrase, “is this too direct?”

Clear is kind. Vague is only comfortable for you. Let’s begin. 🚀
