Overview & Goals

Recruiting & Job Descriptions

Every requirement you write down is a door you close. The skill is knowing which doors are worth closing.

In this module you will learn to turn a vague request from a manager into a job description that real people answer. You will separate what a candidate truly must have from what would simply be nice, write about the role without the corporate clichés that put good people off, and defend your choices when the hiring manager wants everything.

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • run a briefing with a hiring manager and ask the right questions;
  • separate must-haves from nice-to-haves, and say why;
  • describe a role and a team in plain, honest English;
  • write a job advert that does not exclude half the market;
  • push back, politely, on a requirement that makes no sense.

Grammar in this module. Modal verbs of obligation and advice (must have, has to, should, doesn’t need to) and adjectives & adverbs — the words that describe a role and can quietly exclude people.
